Beta cell, containing secretory granules loaded with insulin. The granules move to the surface of the cell when stimulated by high levels of glucose. The unequal distribution of the secretory granules is due to the altered morphology of a cell line subject.
The model is based on confocal microscopy data by Professor Rory Duncan of Heriot-Watt University, with thanks to Fiona McCulloch and Professor Gwyn Gould of the School of Life Sciences, Glasgow University.
