Located at the meeting point of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, The Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat was founded by the general Khan Jahan in the 15th Century and was known as Khalifatabad. Extending over 50 square kilometers, the city contains some of the most significant buildings of the initial period of Muslim architecture in Bengal. The city was home to over 300 mosques, bridges, public buildings, mausoleums, water tanks composed of baked brick.
