Built between AD 70 and AD 96 it is the best preserved gateway into any Roman Town in Britain and was largely constructed using locally available mud-stone or Septaria in a matrix of Roman concrete with levelling couses of tiles laid three or more courses deep at regular intervals.The wall core that you see today was originally covered with fair faced stone which survives in places today below ground.
