High Resolution Model of the Balkerne Gate and adjacent wall segments the prinicple gateway into the Roman Town of Colchester (Camulodunum) from the West.
Built between AD 70 and AD 96 it is the best preserved gateway into any Roman Town in Britain and was largely constructed using locally available mud-stone or Septaria in a matrix of Roman concrete with levelling courses of tile laid three or more courses deep at regular intervals. The wall core that you see today is in most places heavily eroded and robbed but must have been stunning given the pattern of fair faced stone and tile bands.
