Asset Overview

📍 [48.84405, 2.35500](https://scaniver.se/L48.84405,2.35500) On the corner of rue Cuvier and rue Linné is the Fontaine Cuvier. Built in 1840, it was designed by the architect Vigoureux. It is located on the site of a fountain previously destroyed during the Revolution named the Fontaine l'Abbaye Saint Victor. The present fountain is named after the French naturalist Georges Cuvier who although born in Montbéliard; 23 August 1769, died in the house at number 43 on this street on 13 May 1832. Among his accomplishments was the founding of comparative anatomy, although his main interest was paleontology. The feminine figure rests upon a chair supported by anphibious animals sculpted by Pierre Pomateau. In her left hand she holds a tablet upon which is written "Connaître la raison des choses" - the motto of Cuvier.
