DStr. San Gennaro Catacomb Fresco, Napoli (11a)

DStretch Version The arched niche (arcosolium) for at least 1 burial is located in a hypogeum (an underground tomb of greater size) in the upper level of the catacombs. The niche is currently dated in the Early Middle Ages. The catacombs itself were used for burials from the 2nd century AD to the Middle Ages. Paintings: The back wall (framed by a band with gems) of the tomb is decorated with a medallion, which depicts the bust of a deceased man with a codex. Tendrils of wine grow out of two cornucopia and flank the medallion. The reveal depicts in the zenith the Mother of God and subjacent 2 named saints: Agrippino (right) and Gennaro (left). Processed from 599 photos and 2 laser scans.
