Asset Overview

DStretch. San Gennaro Catacombs Fresco, Naples (15) The 2 arched niches (arcosolia) for 5 burials and 2 rectangular holes (loculi) are located at the beginning of the middle corridor in the lower level of the catacombs. The niches are currently dated in the 4th century AD. Left: The back wall is decorated with a basket from which a vine branch grows. In the reveal are cupids and a tendril of wine. Right: A peacock (Symbol of imperishability) occupies the back wall and a group of people (maybe Christ and the Apostles) is on the left lower reveal. The motives are surrounded by festoons, birds, baskets, flowers and fruits. In front: marble imitation between cupids. Processed from 1975 photos and 4 laser scans. The result of a joint project of GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale", and the Administration of the Catacombe di Napoli. Processed in Reality Capture. The descriptions were provided by Seniorprofessor Dr. Dieter Korol, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
