Asset Overview

Quadrifrons arch (1st century a.C.) in Terracina, Italy. The monumental entrance to the Emilian forum towards the east was constituted by this arch. Freed from medieval structures in the bombing of 1943, it was originally characterized by four large arches arranged on a square plan and above the Via Appia, whose pavement is still visible. Sometimes four-sided arches were placed at crossroads, The arch was one of the main honorific styles in the Roman world, a wide variety and number of arches have survived.
