Asset Overview
This sculpture of a gardian lion lies at the center of Bhaktapur Durbar square. "Durbar" means palace in Nepalese. This sculpture might have been built at the same time of construction of the palace itself somewhere around 16th-17th century over the generation of various kings of Bhaktapur. Though today it somewhat lies at the center, this sculpture in the past originally likey wasn't at the center and very likely might be a remainings of a bigger temple. That is because the palace used to be much larger than what it is now today.
Originally, there were 99 courtyards attached to this place, but now only 6 remain. Others were destroyed in the 1934AD earthquake. Due to no photographs and records before 1934AD, the other destroyed temple couldn't ever be recovered. However, situated at the center, this massive beautiful sculpture has today become a good place to take pics among people.
