Asset Overview

Early Christian cross-Inscribed slab, attached to internal face of the northern wall at the eastern end of the Romanesque Church ruins (OF015-004003-) at Lemanaghan Monastery, County Offaly. A monastery at Lemanaghan (Liath Manchán) was founded in the 7th century by Manchán whose feastday is celebrated on the 24th of January. The outline of a Latin cross has been carved into the surface of a small sandstone slab. The pock-marked outline of the cross is clearly visible. At the top of the cross, an incomplete horizontal line is visible on both sides. The carver may have intended to frame this cross within a panel defined by a line running around the edge of the stone but was never completed. The surface of the stone displays weathering in the form of pitting which is clearly visible beneath the damaged left arm of the cross.
