Asset Overview

Found at the Met in NYC from the late 8th-9th century. This column depicts a richly dressed Maya ruler with an enormous tiered feathered headdress. The figure, flanked by an attendant dwarf. also wears a collar with three images of human heads and a long beaded necklace. In his right hand he carreis a hooked obsidian scepter, and his left arm is hidden behind a shield. THe ruler's face was originally painted red but was intentionaly damaged in antiquity. Carved columns are rare in Maya art but appear in the Puuc region of the Yucatan Peninsula. Day 11 1scanaday austinbeaulier.com
