St. George - according to the legends - was a Roman officer in Asia Minor who died as a martyr in 303. As a knights’ saint he was renowned for having saved a princess from a fierce dragon. He was invoked against leprosy. The Danish leper hospitals, which lay outside towns, to avoid the spread of infection, were called St. George Houses.
