San Gennaro Catacomb Fresco, Naples (2)

A part of a corridor in the upper level of the catacombs shows an arched niche (with a recess for a lamp in the bottom) and 2 rectangular holes (loculi). The niche is decorated with the bust of a deceased woman in prayer position. She is flanked by two opened books with the names of the four evangelists (John, Mark, Matthew and Luke). Above her head is a Christogram. She is named as Bitalia. Inscription: BITALIA IN PACE (in peace). The white letters (Latin) on the red field above the niche are hard to read. The paintings are currently dated in the 5th-6th century AD. Processed from 257 photos and 1 laser scans. The result of a joint project of GDH, the Zamani Project, Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale", and the Administration of the Catacombe di Napoli. Processed in Reality Capture.
