Asset Overview

The South gate of the ruined walls of the Roman town of Silchester - or Calleva Atrebatum - on the border between Berkshire and Hampshire in Southern England. Now about four metres high, the flint and greensand stone walls would originally have been about 7.5 metres high. The gateway here is about four metres wide - enough for a single cart - and would have ben covered by a gate tower. The walls were built in about AD 270, to reinforce the earth ramparts that were erected in about AD 200. Calleva is unusual in that after the Roman era the site was almost completely abandoned and not built over; the site of the town is now almost entirely open fields - enclosed by the complete town wall. The English Heritage description of Silchester (including an artist's impression of the South Gate) can be found here: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/silchester-roman-city-walls-and-amphitheatre/history/description/ Low-res model made in Photoscan from 280 images captured using a Mavic drone.
