Asset Overview

This mutilated lantern cross in St Mary's churchyard, Penzance, depicts the Crucifixion on the west face, Virgin and Child on the east. Reputedly from a medieval chapel which once stood in the Barbican, the stone was moved to St Mary’s churchyard in 1850. It even has a poem... Some wonder what I am, or say I’m but a block of stone; ‘Tis true, I am, ah well a day! Unheeded and unknown; From Ludgvan’s rock hewn long ago When saints were Cornwall’s glory, But can you in this borough show A stone with such a story? G.B. Millett
