Asset Overview

This fountain was created by Hanna Gärtner in 1928 and it is the first work of a female sculptor, that was erected in Vienna, Austria. Hanna Gärtner was born in 1899 in Vienna as the daughter of the pathologist Gustav Gärtner. She studied art in Kopenhagen, Denmark and was the first woman who enrolled on the "Akademie der bildenden Künste" (Academy of visual arts) in Vienna. In 1933 she emigrated to California. I didn't find any information about her time in the US. She committed suicide in 1947. After the first world war Vienna was governed by the social democrats, who started a public housing program to improve the living conditions of people of the lower class. Part of the concept was to erect works of art in the public room. So the Bärenbrunnen is placed in a park between buildings of public housing in the fifth district of Vienna. In 2018 the park around the Bärenbrunnen got officially named "Hanna Gärtner Park". 48°10'50.7"N 16°21'04.5"E 15. Nov. 2019 Metashape 1.5.5 | Blender 2.81 | Canon EOS M50
