15th-18th C Graffiti, Chateau de la Roche-Guyon

Part of a collection of 15th-18th Century French graffiti documented at the Chateau de la Roche-Guyon, France during the summer of 2018. Documentation done with Sony A7III and processed in Reality Capture from 130 photos. GDH ID Graffiti 3. Alphabetiform graffiti. The letter M is engraved, referring to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. Since the Middle Ages it was very common in Europe to engrave the letter M on various walls and rocks, as a sign of devotion to the Virgin Mary and to implore its protection against Evil. It would be an expression of popular religiosity.
