Asset Overview

This glass fragment, probably from a champagne flute, is a type of glass known as 'souvenir glass' which was popular around the turn of the 20th century. Souvenir glass was made of cheaper molded glass intended to like more expensive hand-cut glass. The ruby color was popular for souvenir glasses that were commonly bought at large events or popular tourist destinations. Found during the 2015 field school, this glass has an exact date of '1905' written on it. Additionally, the glass exhibits the letters "Lu" in cursive right before the break. Since the 2015 excavations were of the Gunson site (the site thought to be Prof. Gunson's house on campus), it is believed that this souvenir glass could have been personalized for his second wife, Lutie Gunson. It is also possible that they took a trip to Mackinac Island where these types of glasses were commonly sold! Model created by Jack A. Biggs using the Artec Space Spider.
