This is a work in progress. I am attempting to replicate Cathy Hay's c. 1890s Symington reproduction corset in The Underpinnings Museum. From what I can tell, this corset was designed to maximize comfort, since there is very little waist reduction and it would most likely have been mass manufactured. This means that it probably would have been purchased by working women who had to exert themselves physically and needed corsets that could accomodate that. This is not, however, an athletic corset. Athletic corsets had shoulder straps and tended to be less heavily boned.
Update: I watched one of Cathy's YouTube videos and noticed the corset in the background, so I don't think the museum has it anymore. Regardless, that's where my reference photos are from, and you can visit their site if you want to see the original.
