Asset Overview

This galena (lead ore) specimen in quartz is one of many items in Ballarat Council’s historic collection that have been gifted to the City throughout the years of its diplomatic relations. As the plaque describes, it was presented to the City of Ballarat, Victoria, in 1981 by the city of the same name located in California. The Californian city was in fact named after Ballarat, Victoria, by an Australian migrant, due to it being founded in 1896 as a supply point for the mines in the nearby canyons of the Panamint Range.
