This timber ballot box was used to collect votes cast by Ballarat citizens during Council elections, to decide which Councillors would represent the municipality's South Ward. Though no longer in use, the ballot box is one of several in the collection that contribute to our understanding of how the democractic society we know today developed in Ballarat. In fact, Ballarat is known by many as the birthplace of Australian democracy, as it was the location for the only armed civil uprising in the country's history - the Eureka rebellion of 1854 - which was part of a campaign for fair treatment and the democritisation of colonial government.
