"In 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment to the US Constitution granted African-American men the right to vote. This amendment made it illegal to deny the right to vote because of a citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude."
Women were excluded from voting for another 50 years. The women's suffrage movement celebrated their voting rights victory when the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920."
