In April 1934, Matsutaro Shoriki decided to invite an all-American baseball team to Japan for the purpose of fostering the development of baseball in Japan. This was the second such invitation, following the first one in 1931. As soon as the news of the invitation of the U.S. team, which included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other top-notch players, reached Japan, the entire country shouted with joy and welcomed it. In response, the All-Japan team was made up mainly of famous players from the six universities. The Japanese athletes who participated in the tournament, risking the honor of their alma mater, gathered in Yatsu, and used the area as a place to hone their skills and devote their hearts and souls to devising strategies and refining their techniques. In December 1934, the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants (later renamed the Yomiuri Giants) were born from the All-Japan team of that time.
