Figure (Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī).
Mañjuśrī is the embodiment of wisdom. His head is surrounded by a flaming mandala and his foot rests upon a lotus-bud. He is depicted sitting on the skin of a lion, indicating his power. This devotional figure was designed only to be seen from the front. The movement in the drapery suggests this scuplture was once part of an elaborate Buddhist complex probably commissioned by the court.
12th century.
