Asset Overview

Scheduled prehistoric carved boulder found in the Bracken Heads area of Langleydale Common, ESE of Eggleston, County Durham. This is thought to be one of the carvings first discovered by Paul Brown in 1996, and is one of a number of small panels clustered together in a cairnfield. The county council Historic Environment Record cross references the stone to ‘4?’ in Beckensall & Laurie’s 1998 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale’. NADRAP added the record 'Brackenheads 2' to ERA in 2008. If the cross-referencing is correct, all the archives record 5 cups. ERA info: https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/era/section/panel/overview.jsf?eraId=2025 Historic England scheduling: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1021114 Model created from 5 stereo pairs captured by Joe Gibson & Keith Elliott (NADRAP Team 3) in November 2006. The imagery forms part of the full NADRAP archive deposited with Historic England.
