Asset Overview

15th Century BCE Northern European Oakeshott Collection Catalogue Number: OC078 A typical example of swords from the middle of the European Bronze Age, this piece shows the high level of skill and craftsmanship present in metalworking at the time. The leaf-shaped blade has a lenticular cross section, and has been hammered in to a sharp edge for the majority of its length. The hilt and the blade of this sword are attached via two rivets, and similar pieces have shown that most likely a tang continues to run up in to the grip. Close inspection of the hilt and blade will reveal delicate ornamental engraving, consisting of lines, whorls, and serpentine patterns wrapping around the piece.
