Asset Overview

3D scan of the 47.3 kilogram Cabin Creek iron meteorite, which due to its shape, is the best example of a so-called oriented meteorite. The fall took place at 3:17 pm on March 27th 1886. The meteorite was found in a 90 cm deep hole, not far from Cabin Creek in Arkansas (USA), after some loud sounds and whirring noises were heard as far as 120 km away from the impact point. The meteorite was generously donated by the factory-owner Albert Mayer von Gunthof. The Cabin Creek meteorite is Number 18 of the NHM Top 100 and can be seen in Hall 5 of the NHM Vienna. **Meteorite**: Cabin Creek (Medium octahedrite / IIIAB) **Inventory number**: NHMW-Min F6342 **Collection**: Natural History Museum Vienna, Dept. of Mineralogy & Petrography, Meteorite Coll.
