Cattle femur with evidence of butchery.
The Earl Of Abergavenny carried livestock on board to feed high ranking crew and passengers. Barrels of salted beef and pork would have formed the rations for the lower ranking crew and passengers.
The livestock were kept on the poop deck of the ship leading to a description of East Indiamen as 'floating farmyards'.
Sheep, chicken, cattle, pig & turkey remains have been found on the wreck.
Information courtesey of Ed Cumming and Dr Philip Armitage.
