Asset Overview

The* City of Washington* is located about six miles offshore near Key Largo, FL. Indiana University has conducted research on this 1917 shipwreck since the early 1990's, resulting in the successful addition of the *City of Washington* to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Trail. This 3D model, of one of the site's more prominent features, was prepared by IU Center for Underwater Science research associate Kirsten Hawley during the 2016 field season in order to demonstrate photogrammetric documentation of submerged cultural resources. Launched in 1877 from Chester, Pennsylvania, the hybrid ship, which used a double mast sailing design along with a triple expansion steam engine, now lies on the ocean floor. The* City of Washington* was present and provided aid following the 1898 explosion of the *U.S.S. Maine* in Havana Harbor, which sparked the beginning of the Spanish-American War.
