Asset Overview

This is a laser scanned model of a US Coronet Head Cent found in 2015 in Toronto by Archaeological Services, Inc. during its excavation of the CityPlace schooner, an early 19th-century merchant vessel. It was discovered in the vessel's main mast step and was likely deliberately placed there at the time of construction, following a centuries old tradition for bringing a vessel good luck. The date on the coin is illegible due to wear, but it is of a type produced between 1816 and 1839. The CityPlace schooner wreck is currently located at the Fort York National Historic Site and is the subject of an archaeological study by scholars from the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University.
