Asset Overview
This fragment of pottery was once part of the rim of a cooking jar. It is tempered with crushed quartz grit and sand. The exterior surfaces of fabric-marked pottery are impressed with a simple wicker fabric-wrapped paddle consisting of twisted cordage weft interwoven over rigid ward elements. Interior surfaces are mostly smoothed, though the fabric impressions can extend to the interior rim surface. On this particular sherd, an unusual decorative pattern of small punctations was added to the interior surface. Clements series ceramics, first described at the Gaston site (31Hx7) in Halifax County, NC, are similar to Yadkin Fabric Impressed pottery commonly found in the southern Piedmont and both generally date to the Middle Woodland period (ca. A.D. 100-500). This artifact was found at a multi-component site (31WA2199) in eastern Wake County, NC. It measures 3.5 cm tall, 4.0 cm wide, and 0.8 cm thick. This model was constructed by David Cranford with 57 photos using Agisoft Metashape software. Credit: NCDCR/OSA
