Asset Overview
Crystal River Archaeological State Park on Florida's gulf coast preserves one of the state's most significant archaeological sites. Occupied for over a millennia and a half, this mound complex was an important spot on the landscape for the Native Americans of this region.
One interesting component of the site is that several limestone stele were erected at some point by the inhabitants. They are interpreted as ceremonially significant, but it is not clear exactly in what capacity they served. They are, not surprisingly, the subject of incredible conspiracy theories and pseudo-scientific interpretations. On the flat face of the rock, some even claim to see a carving of a human head and torso. Do you? If you do, be sure to look up what pareidolia is before you make wild suggestions!
