Asset Overview
At first sight this boulder appears to be heavily cup marked. Its location also ticks all the boxes for where you would expect to find such a rock art site. However, closer examination of the 'cup marks' reveals most of them to probably be natural as many have sharp edges to their lips, vertical sides or irregular, even undercut, profiles. Most are on the vertical faces of the boulder which would also be unusual as rock art in Scotland is largely on horizontal surfaces. There is one large, upward facing cup mark on the SW end of the top surface of the stone which, if this was the only such mark on it, would be acceptable as an authentic cup mark.
It is possible that this natural 'cup marked' boulder was deliberately moved to this location & maybe enhanced with one or more additional cup marks (there are a couple more tentative possibles). This has been recorded as a possible rock art site in the ScRAP record.
