Asset Overview

Honorary grave for Carl Ritter von Ghega at Vienna Central Cemetery. The imposing neo-Renaissance tomb with a sarcophagus on a high pedestal with covered arcade architecture was designed by Dominik Avanzo and Paul Lange. Carl Ritter von Ghega (1802-1860) was an Austrian engineer and the builder of the Semmering Railway from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag. Construction of the Semmering Railway began in 1848, and 20,000 workers were needed to build the 14 tunnels and 16 viaducts of the 40 km long line. Even before completion in 1854, the engineer was knighted in 1851. Carl Ritter von Ghega designed a railroad network for the entire Habsburg monarchy in 1853/1854. ![](https://wien.denkmal-3d.at/SF/ehrengrab_ghega01.jpg)
