Asset Overview

This transferprinted ironstone child's mug featuring the named "Frances" ([ESP.38869](https://bostonarchaeo.omeka.net/items/show/193936)) was recovered from the privy of 27-29 Endicott Street, a mid-19th century brothel in Boston's North End. Several artifacts associated with hildren were found, including another mug with a partial name reading "Loui", probably Louis or perhaps Louisa. Louisa Cowen was one of the madams of the brothel from 1857-1865. Perhaps these mugs were childhood treasures kept into adulthood, or perhaps there was a little Frances or Louis/a running around. No children are recorded as having lived at the site while it was a brothel, but the additional presence of several toys in the assemblage suggests that children may have spent time there.
