Filigree Eye Necklace

My eye will never be neutral, it will always be informed by my culture. A metal supporting structure is placed around an eye. A structure of looking, of understanding, of existing. We all live within our structures of culture. Mine being an eye informed by a civil war, by a country which no longer exists: Yugoslavia. My memory of this culture is linked to this process of looking. Looking at the artifacts, memories of my mom’s jewelry, is what connects me back to where my family is from. A culture, its stories passed down, wrapped up in a necklace I onced gazed upon as a child. But can my eye ever truly remember the things I have never seen?
