Asset Overview

River god Inn in the Vienna Burggarten. The sculpture comes from the Danubisbrunnen (Albrechtsbrunnen) which was built in the years 1864 to 1869. The fountain was designed by Moritz von Löhr, the Carrara marble sculptures were made by Johann Meixner. The 12 sculptures represented the Danube and the rivers of the Habsburg Monarchy. On March 12, 1945, the fountain was severely damaged by bombs and was reduced in size after the Second World War. The allegorical representations of the rivers Enns, Mur, Raab, Salzach and Traun ended up in the castle park of Wieselburg an der Erlauf, the Drau came to Greifenburg an der Drau and the Inn to Wiener Neustadt. The March has disappeared. The wall niches where they were placed were bricked up. In order to be able to restore the fountain, the city of Vienna made efforts to have the figures returned; the figure of the March was replaced by a copy. In the course of the redesign of the entrance area of the Albertina, the Inn and the Drau was removed into the Burggarten.
