This is a fossil paua or abalone of the genus Haliotis. It was collected from Inland Kaikoura, New Zealand. It is about 30 million years old, from the Oligocene.
Respiratory holes can be seen near the outer part of the lip. Like its modern descendants, this paua would have clung to a rocky surface by muscular ‘foot’ on the bottom of its shell.
