Asset Overview

Pine cone found on the ground near an archaeological site in the Coconino Forest close to Sedona, Arizona, . The pine cones from Pinyon Pine trees similar to this were prized by Native American Indians in the SW region as being a multi-use source of nutrition and medicines. The nut like seeds derived from cones like this were ground up to make flour or eaten raw or roasted. Pine trees such as this type were sought out as they would also attract birds and animals who were then hunted. This model is part of an ongoing project to document facets of the life of Native Americans as seen at some of our Heritage Sites.
