Asset Overview

In wet low-lying marshland close to td. boundary. A natural spring well, beside which lies a small rectangular round-headed slab (H 0.99m, Wth 0.35m) depleting a crucifixion scene and dated 1764 (recorded as 1762 by the ASI). The stonemason placed tails on both the 1 and 7 giving the appearance of a 3, however the date 1762 makes more sense in the context of the stone. The INRI and overall folk style of the carving are indicative of the time. The Cock in the pot symbolism to the right of the figure also helps to date the stone. A cock sitting on a pot, This iconography is linked to the story of Judas who returns home to kill himself after Christ is killed. His wife is cooking a cock over fire, and she says that Christ is as likely to rise as the cock she is cooking. Just then the cock springs to life. Local tradition notes 29 June, the feast of St. Peter and Paul was a day to the well. The site appears to be called Tobar Maoile ?? OSI
