Asset Overview

Genevieve Fountain by Viktor Tilgner from 1886. The fountain near the Hermes Villa in Vienna's 13th district takes up the legend of Genevieve of Brabant (730-170), daughter of the Duke of Brabant and the wife of Count Palatine Siegfried. When Siegfried went to war, Genevieve was desired by Siegfried's majordomo Golo, but spurned by the faithful Genoveva. He then accused Genevieve of adultery with a cook and sentenced her to death. However, she was spared by the executioner and set free. She then lived with her newborn son in a cave for six years, where Mary, the Mother of God, cared for her by means of a hind. Finally, her husband Siegfried, who always believed in her innocence, found her again and built a pilgrimage church in gratitude for Genevieve's salvation. Golo was quartered after the truth became known. ![](https://wien.noe-3d.at/SF/genoveva01.jpg)
