Asset Overview

Sassanid coins were struck by the kings of the Sassanid dynasty Already from the first years of the reign of Ardashir, the founder of the dynasty, coins were minted with Pahlavi inscriptions (instead of Greek, as under the Arzakids) and with special, sharply different types from the previous ones. The obverse side of the coins always represents the image of the bust of the king in a crown, the shape of which changes with each new reign; in front of the face is the king's own name and his title. The turnover is almost always the same: a flaming altar and on its sides two figures — the king and the great priest of the god Ormuzd, and around various inscriptions of pious content.
