Asset Overview

This cross base is to the left of the south porch of Gulval Church, near Penzance in Cornwall. On each side of this cross base is an image of each of the Four Evangelists, St Matthew, St Mark, St Luke, and St John. These particular representations are very unusual in that the saints are depicted with the heads and features of the creatures that represent them. It perhaps dates from the 9th century. The smaller object on top of the cross-base is from a much later lantern cross and was probably cemented on top in the late 19th century.
