Asset Overview

Material: [Walrus Ivory](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300417717). Accession no: BM 001. Current location: [The Hunt Museum](https://www.huntmuseum.com/), [Limerick](https://www.geonames.org/7778675/limerick-city.html). This [reliquary](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300187549) cross is made in two pieces, which, when put together, form a box in the shape of a crucifix, perhaps to contain a relic of the true cross. The front depicts the figure of Christ on the cross under the hand of God. Christ's foot overhangs the frame and the finely carved loin-cloth falls below the knee. The eyes are inlaid with either [jet](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300045514) or paste. The reverse shows the [Agnus Dei](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnus_Dei) within a [quatrefoil](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300009784) surrounded by the symbols of the Four Evangelists. [12th Century](http://n2t.net/ark:/99152/p08m57h8zmq). [More](https://tinyurl.com/yc4pfttp).
