Asset Overview

One of the most remote and dramatically sited Roman forts in Britain, the small, three-acre fort at Hardknott (Cumbria, UK) enjoyed command of the Eskdale Valley and the Roman road to Ravenglass. The fort was established early in the second century AD. All forts were provided with granaries to store the grain which formed the main part of the soldiers diet. The model shows two granary buildings. They have thick outer walls, presumably to support the weight of their superstructure and slate roofs. They had raised wooden floors to keep the grain dry, supported on still visible piers. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/hardknott-roman-fort/history/ The model was created from 419 photographs.
