Asset Overview

Statue of St. Agatha at the parish church of the same name in Hausleiten. The Agatha column from 1910 was created by sculptor Bredeweg. Agatha of Sicily died under Emperor Decius between 249 and 251 as a consecrated virgin and martyr. According to tradition, Agatha was born to wealthy parents. As a consecrated virgin, she rejected the marriage proposal of the pagan governor Quintinianus because she had vowed virginity. Because Agatha rejected him, the governor had her taken away to a brothel for a month. Since she still rejected him after this time, Quintinianus had her condemned and had her breasts cut off. After this torture, according to legend, St. Peter appeared to her and tended her wounds. When this was noticed, the governor had Agatha laid on burning coals, which caused her death.
