Asset Overview
Model of Howden Hill 3 made from 18 photos taken during landscape survey by NOWTAG in March 2020.
The Beckensall Archive record for Howden Hill described:
*"Sixteen cup-marks were noted on a boulder that forms part of the Round Cairns west of Middle House (Tynedale) by an English Heritage Field Warden."*
The Northumberland HER describes three round cairns which are Scheduled Monuments. The boulder (1 x 0.6 x 0.4m) stands within the disturbed centre of the eastmost cairn, located on the edge of the steep valley of Settlingstones Burn. It is not clear whether this is the stone reported or even whether the marks on its surface are artificial as it has been heavily weathered. However, the markings could be considered as consistent with 16 cups.
Two panels, further west, were recorded during the N&DRAP survey in 2007, partly or wholly turf-covered, with much larger numbers of definite cups and Scheduled in 2007
