Asset Overview

The presented instrument was used to measure the magnetic inclination, i.e. the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic field. The device was made by Moritz Meyerstein (1808–1882), a mechanic at the University of Göttingen, who collaborated with with Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) and Wilhelm Weber (1804–1891). Gauss and Weber conducted research on the Earth's magnetic field in the mid-nineteenth century.
