Asset Overview

3D scan of a mounted Javan rhinoceros (*Rhinoceros sondaicus*). When the animal was first discovered and described in the 13th century, it lived in rainforests throughout Southeast Asia. According to the latest estimate, there are 73 animals left, all confined to the Ujung Kulon National Park at the western tip of Java in Indonesia. The fourteen-month-old male on display at the museum was captured at the end of the 18th century and mounted in 1801, making it one of the oldest mounted animals at the NHM Vienna. The Javan rhinoceros is Number 89 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 35 of the NHM Vienna. **Specimen**: *Rhinoceros sondaicus* Desmarest, 1822 **Inventory number**: NHMW-Zoo-MAMM 8198/ST319 **Collection**: Natural History Museum Vienna, 1st Zoological Dept., Mammal Coll.
