Asset Overview

Joseph Antonio Emidy (1775 – 23 April 1835) was a Guinean-born British musician who was enslaved by Portuguese traders in his early life. He was later freed and resided in Portugal before being impressed into the Royal Navy. He was eventually discharged near Cornwall and later became a notable and celebrated violinist and composer in the region, passing away in 1835. His children were renowned musicians in their own right and were in great demand throughout Cornwall playing for balls, quadrilles and country dances. Joseph's headstone can be found in the churchyard of Kenwyn Church, above Truro, in Cornwall, UK. 📍 [Truro, England](https://scaniver.se/L50.27302,-5.06014)
